Caching — Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket

Preptober Month Series — Week 2
⚡ Next Week: PPP — Picking the Proper Pack. We’ll cover how to choose the right bag for your mission and highlight our backpack sale.
When disaster hits, one thing is certain: your main supply stash will always be more vulnerable than you think. Fires, floods, looters, or forced evacuations can wipe out months (or years) of prepping in a matter of minutes.
That’s why serious preppers use caching — strategically hiding smaller supply stashes across different locations to ensure redundancy and survival no matter what happens.
Why Cache?
-
Redundancy = Insurance
If your home supply is compromised, caches keep you in the fight. -
Mobility Without Overload
Instead of hauling 80 lbs. of gear, travel light knowing resupply is stashed along your route. -
Secrecy & Security
Caches are hidden. Looters can’t steal what they can’t find.
📌 Example: During Hurricane Katrina, many preppers who stored everything at home lost their supplies to flooding. Those with caches outside the flood zone had options and mobility while others had nothing.
What to Cache
-
Survival Basics: Fire-starting kits, knives, water filters, tarps.
-
Food & Water: Freeze-dried meals, purification tabs, ration bars, emergency water pouches.
-
Medical Supplies: IFAK, trauma bandages, antibiotics (where legal), CAT tourniquets.
-
Documents & Cash: Copies of IDs, emergency contacts, gold & silver coins, cash in various denominations.
-
Barter Items: Cigarettes, lighters, small tools.
-
Firearms & Extra Ammo: Ensuring that you have adequate ammo for the primary and secondary firearms you are bugging out with is essential. Should you be unable to grab your firearms before you go, then be sure to put at a spare secondary firearm in your cache with enough ammo.
💡 Pro-Tip: Double seal everything — vacuum bags inside waterproof containers with desiccant packs.
Where to Cache
-
Rural: Woods, trails, under natural markers (rocks, logs), and even under water.
-
Urban: False walls, abandoned lots, discreet lockboxes.
-
Mobile: Vehicles, RVs, or hidden compartments.
⚠️ Avoid places that may flood, get dug up, or draw attention. And remember: loose lips sink ships. Don’t share cache locations.
Everyday Carry Caching
-
Clothing: Choose clothing that offers you an extra edge to cache necessities with the Wazoo Cache Belt, Wazoo Patch Cache Cap, and Wazoo Cache Cap. Hidden pockets and compartments allow you to covertly carry vital items in plain sight.
-
Cacheable Kits: Our good friends over at Wazoo have thought of everything when it comes to well thought-out survival kits designed to work with their belts and caps. Choose between the Everyday Essentials Kit or upgrade to the Adventure Kit.
-
The Everyday Basics: If you opt for the Wazoo Cache Belt or one of their Cache Caps, then you’ll want to keep the everyday basics stashed away in there - cash, spare medication, house keys, and the caps can even fit a spare credit card.
Mistakes to Avoid
-
Poor waterproofing (rust, rot, ruined food). Go with PVC pipe with a liquid waterproof sealant.
-
Overloading one cache instead of spreading supplies. Consider planting caches in the four cardinal directions from homebase.
-
Forgetting the location (always map with coded references).
-
Talking about caches with others.

The PACE System
Random caching is just stashing junk. To be effective, you need a system. That system is PACE:
-
Primary — your main supply stash.
-
Alternate — first backup.
-
Contingency — farther away, accessible if cut off.
-
Emergency — your last resort, hidden deep.
This layered planning method is trusted by military, intelligence, and survival professionals worldwide. It’s not theory — it’s field-tested.
